There is no shortage of learning and fun at the DCS preschool. Licenced to provided services for up to 15 children between the ages of 3 and 5 years, we often have a waiting list for enrolment. The preschool staff are committed to supporting children's cognitive development and language learning. Respectful of individual differences and abilities, the staff foster a caring community, helping the children learn to play and work together cooperatively. At the same time, children learn self awareness and self worth, and the value of their contributions to their classroom, family and community.
Staff communicate with the students using American Sign Language (ASL), sign supported speech, and/or speech alone as needed to meet the needs of each child. Respect for various communication modes is modeled and children are encouraged to express themselves verbally or in sign language.
Children are provided with group and individual speech-language therapy by qualified speech-language pathologists.
Art, drama, music, physical activity, books, story telling and special field trips and events are just a small part of the rich and varied curriculum designed with the needs of each child in mind. Children engage in calendar time daily, music and rhythm, manipulative and free play, and circle time. There are always many crafts and art activities to engage in, where fine motor skills are developed. Gym and outdoor time provide the children with opportunities to engage in physical exercise and develop their coordination.
