early learning Program
at the DCS Preschool Center

language and learning
Located within the BC School for the Deaf and South Slope Elementary School, our Early Learning program runs from 9am-12pm Monday to Friday.  Our highly trained and experienced Early Childhood Educators are committed to supporting children's cognitive development, social-emotional development and language learning.  Respectful of individual differences and abilities, the staff foster a caring community, helping the children learn to play and work together cooperatively.  At the same time, children learn self awareness and self worth, and the value of their contributions to their classroom, family and community.  The DCS Early Learning Program prepares children for entry into Kindergarten.
Staff communicate with the students using American Sign Language (ASL).  Respect for various communication modes is modelled and children are encouraged to express themselves verbally or in sign language.

speech-language support
Children are provided with group and individual speech-language therapy by qualified speech-language therapists.

enriched curriculum
Art, drama, music, physical activity, books, story telling and special field trips and events are just a small part of the rich and varied curriculum designed for the needs of each child.  Children engage in calendar time daily, music and rhythm, manipulative and free play, and circle time.  There are always many crafts and art activities to engage in, where fine motor skills are developed.  Gym and outdoor time provide the children with opportunities to engage in physical exercise and develop their coordination.

There is no shortage of learning and fun at the DCS Early Learning Program.  Licensed to provide services for up to 15 children between the ages of 2.5 and 5 years, we often have a waiting list for enrolment.  The preschool staff are committed to supporting children's cognitive development and language learning.  Respectful of individual differences and abilities, the staff foster a caring community, helping the children learn to play and work together cooperatively.  At the same time, children learn self awareness and self worth, and the value of their contributions to their classroom, family and community. (contact our office for registration of children 2.5-3 years of age)
