american Sign Language

At the Deaf Children's Society, we believe that any child will thrive given accessibility to a complete, rich and natural language early in life.  American Sign Language (ASL) provides complete access to language.  There are many benefits associated with signing with children.

*promotes intellectual development and visual spatial skills
*reinforces memory and creative skills
*empowers children to communicate
*facilitates learning of other languages
*improves overall brain development

individual family sign language lessons
Sign language lessons are provided to the family and extended family at our Burnaby center.  These fun and enjoyable lessons are offered on a weekly or bi-weekly basis according to the family's needs. Our qualified Deaf instructors will provide sign lessons that meet the day-to-day communicative needs of the family, with basic sign language vocabulary to start, working up to sentences, stories and curriculum to keep up with your children!  Sign Language instruction is also available on an
Outreach basis and online.

group sign language classes

Once a week, at the preschool, parents and extended family members may join a 90 minute sign language class that reflects the themes occurring in the preschool that week.  These classes offer basic vocabulary and dialogue skills through games, interaction and direct instruction.  Group parent classes run every Monday from 9 30-11am and group grandparent classes run every Friday from 9 30-11am. Note: due to the current COVID-19 health crisis, all classes are now held online
